Following the growing concern over the quality of the services provided by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS foundation trust, Sir David Henshaw has been appointed as Chair of the trust for a temporary period.

Sir David Henshaw was welcomed to the trust by Stephen Hay, Monitor's chief operating officer. While welcoming Sir David, Hay said, “Sir David Henshaw is an experienced chair and it will be his job to take whatever action is necessary to fix the problems so that patient care is delivered to the standards they should be able to expect – now and in the future”.

Sir David Henshaw would be keeping a tab over the working of the trust and at the same time would also be looking at Liverpool's Alder Hey children's hospital. Besides, appointing Sir David Henshaw, the trust has also asked Morecambe Bay to help in recruiting 'turnaround director' who would prove helpful in planning out strategies to overcome the obstacles of the trust.

While addressing the board members of the trust, Hay said that the steps being taken by the Monitor are directed towards improving the services of the trusts. An investigation called over the working of the trust has found that patients seeking treatment at maternity and neonatal services of the hospital were worse hit by the mismanagement of the trust.

It is hoped that Sir David would provide adequate guidance to improve the working of the NHS. It has been pointed out the safety of the patient is poor maintained and the trust also lacks in leadership quality. New babies and mothers are also being made to suffer at the trust as proper care to them is not being provided.

However, it is hoped that in the coming times, the trust would be able to deal with the issues without further jeopardizing the health of the patients.
