Rare Orange-Bellied Parrot Threats Closure of Marine Project

As per recent reports, it has been revealed that orange bellied parrot which has not been seen is Victoria for nearly 25 years have raised concerns for a $50 million marina expansion on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. It’s feared that the project which will provide 250 opportunities could be halted amid concerns for rare orange-bellied parrot.

Experts have declared that there is no parrot in the area for quarter a century now, but the government is not paying heed to them. This has led the Federal Opposition to ask the support from the Environment Ministry and have asked them to intervene in the matter.

The Environment Department assured that they would assess the matter and accordingly would tell them whether or not the project can move further. But the Opposition's Environment spokesman, Greg Hunt has told that the matter should be reviewed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Project developer Stefan Borzecki has complained that the matter is taking too much time and also affirmed that the government should pay attention to expert’s decision.

"They are saying that we have to prove that the development will not impact on the orange-bellied parrot and of course it's very hard to find a consultant to prove that and we are just waiting for instructions from Canberra”, said Stefan. There is no way to prove that rare orange-belied parrots are not in the area. The only way is to ask the government to go and check whether they are lying or not, said he.

The project is very important for them and for others as it going to create jobs for 250 people. Hence, it is necessary that decision in this regard comes soon. So they could start with their pending works.
