Bexarotene Drug Capable of Reversing Alzheimer’s

As per a research that has been published in the journal Science, it has been revealed that a group of US researchers have tested the efficacy of a drug known as bexarotene. From the study, it has been revealed that the drug is capable to reverse the pathological, cognitive and memory deficits which starts appearing at the time of Alzheimer's disease.

The lead researcher, Gary Landreth, who is professor of neurosciences at School of Medicine, said that the drug is already in use for cancer treatments. But it is the first time that a research has been conducted to test the efficacy of a cancer drug for treating neurodegenerative problem Alzheimer's.

Landreth explained that Alzheimer's occurs when body is not able to provide passage to naturally-occurring amyloid beta in the brain. This leads to collection of amyloid in brain, and further results into Alzheimer's disease.

They found that bexarotene is capable to raise the level of Apolipoprotein E (ApoE). Landreth and his team decided to conduct mice experiment and were amazed to see the speed of drug for raising the ApoE level in the brain.

"This is a particularly exciting and rewarding study because of the new science we have discovered and the potential promise of a therapy for Alzheimer's disease”, said Landreth. He further affirmed that they were expecting to see good results, but they were spell bound to see such a fast recovery.

In six hours of the experiment, the study researchers noticed that the level of soluble amyloid level has fallen by 25%. Landreth said that the benefits will continue to increase till next three days. The study researchers are planning to conduct further research in the matter in which they would be assessing drug’s efficacy on humans.
