DSM-5 List Raises Concern

It has been recently revealed that a lot many additions are expected in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The edition is due to get publish in 2013, but if fears get true then millions of people who are now counted as normal would be shifted into mad peoples’ list.

Some of the many disorders that can make their place in the list are oppositional defiance disorder in which almost all teenagers will be included, those who are gamblers can make to the list, people who think about sex once in every 20 minutes, children and people who are shy and reserved are also expected to be part of the list.

Depressed people, those who forcefully try to have sex with their spouse and rapists are some other who can make to the list. This is scaring psychiatrists and psychologists in the UK and they said that they are not happy with the things that can be included in it.

There are many illnesses which can be treated with counseling and medication and do not need to put in the DSM-5. They have also signed a petition against the DSM-5 and have argued that medical fraternity should not exaggerate things.

Children who do not obey their parents and argue with them can also be part of the list. Psychologists told that the age of children is such that they do have this behavior in them and it is quite normal and part of their growing age. One cannot say that children who have this kind of behavior are psycho.

Til Wykes, who is professor of clinical psychology at Kings College London, said, “The proposals in DSM-5 are likely to shrink the pool of normality to a puddle with more and more people being given a diagnosis of mental illness”.
