Hunter New England Accepts Cancer Council Recommendations

As per recent reports, it has been revealed that Hunter New England has finally agreed to the 21 out of 24 proposals of the Cancer Council. This is said to be a big win for the Cancer Council as now they would be able to deliver excellent service even under great pressure.

Call it an action to win votes during election time or a genuine effort; the approved recommendations would be of great help for the community. However, the Cancer Council has made it clear that they would be keeping an eye on the New South Wales Government to check that they have not played a trick with them.

Some of the recommendations that have been approved are new chairs for chemotherapy sessions. It would help Newcastle's Calvary Mater Hospital greatly and they would be able to conduct 2,500 extra chemotherapy sessions in a year.

Appointment of Director of Medical Oncology would be done for the district and a triage oncology nurse with a stand-alone private cancer service, are some of the other things that have been approved. The Cancer Council's regional manager, Shayne Connell, said that they are quite happy that there recommendations have been approved.

"Obviously the recommendations are the first step there and I think that's some acknowledgment and validation of the issues but we'll have to make sure that the funding is directed to the Hunter, as it's deserved, to fund some of these more ongoing issues”, said Connell.

It is said that the Hunter New England would be spending additional $400,000 to get four new chemotherapy chairs for the hospital. In addition, recruitments for the said positions will start from March 1. By the end of 2014 all the approved recommendations would be completed, said Connell.
