Brothers Turn Blind Because of Leber's Optic Neuropathy

It has been reported that two siblings have lost their vision due to Leber's Optic Neuropathy. The two were not aware of having the disorder until they lost 80% of their vision.

Michael and Dan Smith are just 20, and have high aims about their life. Michael was the first among the two to come across the symptom of blindness. He is currently undergoing football training for Paralympic Games, which will be organized this year.

He was in the first year of his graduation at London School of Medicine when he turned blind. The same thing happened with his brother, Dan Smith, a student of aeronautical engineering at Bristol University.

It has been informed that the two has lost their vision power, and are now able to see mere shadows or foggy shapes rather than people or other tangible stuff. Because of the illness, they have been pushed to relearn their life, beginning from choosing right type of clothes to cooking.

Michael was devastated to learn about his vision lose. The thought that he won't be able to complete his studies tore him apart. He said, "I did not know what was happening to me. I could not recognize people's faces and I quickly lost my independence. It was the end of life as I knew.. I can never describe how devastating it was to give up on medicine".

When his brother learnt about his condition, he was not able to believe it. Dan is quite closer to Michael and the news of him losing vision was as painful for him as it had been for Michael. As the two are identical twins, they both had the disease. Gradually, Dan also lost his vision to Leber's Optic Neuropathy.
