Scientists Expecting Life at Icy Dark and Cold Regions

As per a new report, a team of scientists from the United States and Britain has begun the hunt of life on the most remote area of Earth. It is being said that Russian scientists pierced through Antarctica's icy crust for the first time and revealed that life could be possible even in extreme cold.

The report has found that Russia has been the first one to pierce through Antarctica's solid ice, about 3,769 metres (12,365 ft) deep, further reaching to one of the most isolated and largest lakes amongst 350 known sub glacial lakes that have been hidden for millions of years.

It has been revealed by the report that scientific explorers from Russia reached a freshwater lake, dubbed Lake Vostok, while piercing through Antarctica to find out new kinds of life in extremely cold climate. The lake was never found and is being believed to be tens of millions of years old.

The team then came out with a conclusion that there are great possibilities of life on extremely cold regions. Also, they told reporters that if the possibilities of existence of life in sunless climate prove to be true in future, it might be possible to imagine life on other planets like Saturn's satellite Enceladus, Mars or Jupiter's moon Europa, which have similar climatic conditions in some way or the other.

John Priscu, a scientist with the U. S. Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling (WISSARD) mission, stated: "They have broken through the ice, opened a window to that world, so we can all more or less follow suit and now do some real science".

However, it has been uncovered that the drilling technology used by the Russian scientists was not adequate, because of which they might need to revisit the lake to collect its frozen samples and review the study in 2013.
