Womb Ailment Possibly Causes Ovarian Cancer

As per a study recently published in the Lancet Oncology journal, a group of researchers from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles has warned that women with endometriosis, a womb disease, are at higher risks of suffering from ovarian cancer.

The study conducted by the team has revealed that there is a direct link between endometriosis and different types of serous ovarian cancers of low grade. And women with a history of the womb disease are likely to be at double risks of being diagnosed with three types of ovarian cancer.

It has been found by the team of researchers from the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (OCAC) in New York that endometriosis can cause any type of major ovarian cancer, including clear cell, mucinous carcinomas, high-grade serous, low-grade serous and endometrioid.

The team of researchers from the university had carried out a study in which the data of almost 23,000 women was considered. It was found after the analysis that while there was more than three times risk of epithelial ovarian cancers with endometriosis. There was a risk of endometrioid tumours two times more than otherwise healthy women.

The report has uncovered that endometriosis is a result of appearance of the uterus lining outside the womb. It targets around 10% of women of reproductive age each year and it sometimes also leads to fertility issues.

"This breakthrough could lead to better identification of women at increased risk of ovarian cancer and could provide a basis for increased cancer surveillance of the relevant population”, lead author Celeste Leigh Pearce avowed. The team suggests that the study would be helpful in finding early detection approaches such as screening and risk-reduction surgery as well as it would allow determining prevention strategies for the same.
