Jimmy Wales shuts down “Wikia Search”

The search service that was once viewed as Google killer - Wikia Search has been terminated by the Wikipedia cofounder Jimmy Wales, after it failed to compete with the search giant Google.

According to Jimmy Wales, he has decided to shut down Wikia Search, in the wake of the current economic downturn. In his blog, he wrote, "If there is one thing that I've learned in my career, it is to do more of what's working, and less of what's not."

However, Wales has said that he is still interested in search business, and sometime in future, if economy allows, he will return to search arena. He wrote, "In a different economy, we would continue to fund Wikia Search indefinitely. It's something I care about deeply. I will return to again and again in my career to search, either as an investor, a contributor, a donor, or a cheerleader."

Wikia Search was launched in late 2006, aiming to compete with Google, but the Wikia Search failed to "the quality of the search results," as compared to the Google's searches. That's what forced Jimmy Wales to sign the death warrant of Wikia Search
