After the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that equipment at Pistachio Co.'s Setton plant has tested positive in salmonella tests, the company voluntarily recalled most of its products made in 2008, shipped to dozens of food firms. The expanded recall includes bulk pistachios sent to 28-states and 14-countries outside of the United States.
While, FDA is not yet sure how many additional products may need to be recalled, the government agency is working with distributors, working hard to update its recall list as quickly as possible.
Last week, over 2-million pounds of Setton pistachios, the second largest pistachio producer in the country, have already been recalled.
Surprisingly, while salmonella tests at the pistachio plant by FDA investigators, who investigated the facility in 2003 and again in 2008 turned out negative, it was one of Setton's customers who found the bacteria on some of the pistachios. This, despite the fact, 15-months ago, both Kraft Foods and the Georgia Nut Co. got positive salmonella tests on products ultimately traced to Setton.
California-based Setton International Foods Inc. sells and distributes pistachios to 36-companies nationwide, including shipping them to suppliers and wholesalers, who repack or resell them to other manufacturers under different brand names. One of which Kroger, which operated grocery stores under different names like Kroger, Ralphs and Dillons, announced last week that it had recalled pistachios from 31-states.
Salmonella symptoms include fever, diarrheoa, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain.
