At Acer’s first-quarter investor’s conference in Taipei on Wednesday, the company’s president and CEO Gianfranco Lanci made a mention of the company’s efforts towards developing several different devices using Google’s Android operating system and software. The company also intends launching a smartphone using the software by 2009-end.
Talking about Acer’s Android-centered move with regard to smartphone, Lanci also hinted at Acer Android netbooks in future. He elaborated saying: “The entire industry is looking at Android. We are testing Android on a lot of different solutions. We are working on an Android solution for the smartphone, but I think it's too early to say if we’re going to see Android on a netbook in the near future."
Lanci referred to Android as an extremely good device for communication and Web access, and cited the popularity of Google’s Android software in smartphones. Acknowledging that netbooks are a “new frontier” for Android, he added that an Android smartphone is much more practical than a netbook with the OS.
Some other recently-announced Android smartphones include those from the G1’s developer; High Tech Computer (HTC); Samsung Electronics, and the Taiwanese Far EasTone. Meanwhile, Android netbooks are being tested by Hewlett-Packard (HP), and China's Guangzhou Skytone Transmission Technologies.
