With the NPD Group's February reports indicating that Pure Digital's original Flip Video cameras top the list of other similar devices, it is no surprise that there have been a number of imitations of the product, trying to cash in on the success of Pure Digital!
The inimitable Pure Digital camera, which gets a refresh on Thursday, is a cut above all competition. It is an enigmatically appealing, somewhat boxy, and plastic-made handheld video camera, which has a pop-out USB arm.
Unnerved by the imitators, Jonathan Kaplan, CEO of Pure Digital, takes their frantic efforts in the company's stride, saying: "It makes me even more proud of the team. Imitation is an absolutely fine form of flattery. I'm happy every time a competitor launches a new product."
Expressing a similar opinion, the NPD Group's industry analysis director, Ross Rubin, said that the dominant market share of Pure Digital has not eroded, even though some big names - like Sony, Kodak, and RCA - have ventured into its sphere of competition - namely, the $200 flash memory-based digital camcorder category.
Though both of the Pure Digital Ultra models - the Ultra II and the Ultra HD - have made their respective marks in the market, they now move on to a comparatively much bigger platform, with Cisco Systems' proposed purchase of Pure Digital!
