In what appeared to be ‘deliberate attack’ on the Dutch royal family, a high-speeding small black car, racing towards the open bus with the Dutch Queen Beatrix and her family aboard, rammed into the crowd during the Queen’s Day holiday parade being held in Apeldoorn, nearly 90 km from Amsterdam, on Thursday.
According to reports, the black Suzuki - which narrowly missed the bus carrying the royal family - crashed into a monument; killing two spectators and injuring fourteen. However, the police have neither commented on the reason behind the supposed attack, nor confirmed the number of casualties. It is also not clear how the car could enter the parade area, which had been cordoned off by the police much before the scheduled parade.
The Dutch television footage of the incident showed Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife, Princess Maxima, standing at their seats in the high open platform of the bus, apparently aghast and dumbstruck!
The Apeldoorn Mayor, Fred de Graaf, said that the cancellation of all festivities had been announced in the city. The Mayor also said that holiday programs in the port city of Rotterdam had also been cancelled, and a nationwide cancellation of the festivities was also likely. Graaf said: “The scare and the images that the family has seen are reason to break off the official program.”
