US sailor wounded in shooting at Fifth Fleet headquarters

Manama, Bahrain  - A US Navy sailor was wounded early Saturday by a gunshot while stationed at the US Navy's Fifth Fleet Command headquarters in Manama, Bahrain.

The sailor, 19, was said to be in a stable condition with a wound to the neck.

He was rushed to a local hospital, but it wasn't immediately clear how the wound was inflicted.

Bahrain is home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet command, which oversee's US and coalition naval forces in the Middle East with a focus on support for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and more recently anti-piracy off the Somali coast.

In October 2007, two female sailors assigned to the Manama base were shot to death by a fellow sailor, who was seriously wounded apparently after turning a gun on himself. Terrorism was ruled out from the 2007 incident, which was treated as criminal investigation by US Navy investigators.

The naval headquarters, which houses some of the US Navy sailors, have a staff of some 3,000 sailors, civilian contractors and coalition troops. (dpa)
