While the proposed healthcare bill is scheduled for debate by the Congress next week, President Obama - attempting to reshape the country's healthcare system - has talked about a new government insurance plan that the patients could choose rather than private coverage.
According to congressional officials, the Senators will be debating on the three different approaches for the health insurance plan, namely, a plan Medicare-type plan run by the Health and Human Services department; a Medicare-type plan run by an outside party; or a public insurance plan by individual states.
Meanwhile, with debates galore about the "public option," interest groups are already involved in an intensely polarized battle, ready to spend millions of dollars in their respective crusades. A series of TV commercials, promoting or attacking the insurance stipulation, have already kicked off on most networks.
In fact, debates about governmental role in insurance have been carrying on for decades. Policymakers and politicians have often been contesting the system that depends on public programs like Medicare for the elderly people, and private insurance for most workers and their families.
Though, with a fresh round of debates on, Obama and his congressional allies are trying out negotiations with leading healthcare groups to keep them off the political warpath, the president recently assured a group of House Democrats of his commitment to a government insurance option!
