Going by the ‘feelers’ resulting from the direct meetings and conversations between with New York Sen. Charles Schumer and Carol Bartz, CEO of Internet giant Yahoo, the Western New York (WNY) region will likely triumph in its bid for the company’s Northeast data center. The offers for the proposed data center have also poured in from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois.
According to Schumer, Yahoo is considering different sites in Niagara, Orleans and Genesee Counties, for its data center that would presently require 60,000 square feet space, with enough room for future expansion.
In order to help materialize deal for a Western New York region data center, which would service the entire Northeast and employ up to 100 people initially, the State and local economic development officials have been calmly trying to woo Yahoo with a rather handsome incentive package since fall last year.
Expressing the hope of landing the Yahoo data center – which will be a momentous economic development accomplishment for the region -, Schumer said: “They are seriously, seriously considering a site in Orleans County or Genesee County. They are considering other sites, but Western New York is at the top of the list.” Schumer added that though the deal is not done as yet, the chances of it being finalized appear to be “very, very good.”
