The Attorney’s office of Cook County State told MTV News on Tuesday that there was sufficient evidence for the police to charge William Balfour - the estranged husband of Julia, elder sister of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson - with the murders of Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew. Police said they had the murder weapon and physical evidence as well as testimony that would convict Balfour.

Balfour, 27, the only suspect in the case, was charged at noon with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of home invasion, in connection with the deaths of Darnell Donerson, Jason Hudson and Julian King. The motive for the October 24 murders involved a dispute between Balfour and Julia.

During a closed hearing last month, investigators presented evidence that Balfour had a gun matching the weapon used in the murders. At the press conference Tuesday, police said that the weapon recovered had been linked back to the homicides. Refusing to talk much about other physical evidence, Chicago Police Deputy Superintendent Steve Peterson said, “we don’t want to give too much up prior to the hearing” scheduled for Wednesday.

Peterson also told reporters that the Hudson family was informed of the charges, and is “relieved and happy that the Chicago police and firemen were able to bring this case to a successful conclusion. He said that the family members had been “a key partner” in the investigation, assisting in establishing a timeline of events.

An arrest warrant was issued for Balfour, prompting his transfer to the Cook County jail from the reception center at Stateville Correctional Center, where he was being held for an alleged parole violation.
