Iomega introduces new generation of eGo portable hard drives

A new line of portable hard disk drives have been introduced by Iomega, under the eGo moniker. The new generation eGo drives, unveiled on Monday, boast of Mac and Windows compatibility, and will be available at a starting price of $85. Iomega has also announced the arrival of new drives, with multiple interface combinations, in June.

The eGo drives, with capabilities up to 500GB, connect to a Mac or PC using USB 2.0. They can be powered from the bus, instead of making use a power supply; include Y-cable; and require Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

The drives have an exterior that is made of anodized aluminum, and are equipped with a 2.5-inch hard disk drive mechanism. Weighing less than seven ounces and with a
0.6-inches thickness, the devices come in three colors - Ruby Red, Midnight Blue, and Silver. While the red versions are available in 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB capacities; the blue and silver models are in 320GB only.

The drives are inclusive of Mac-compatible software including - Iomega QuikProtect, and EMC Retrospect Express. Also included is the MozyHome Online Backup service, with 2GB of capacity for free and unlimited online storage for $5 per month. Moreover, Windows users additionally get a copy of the full computer security package McAfee VirusScan Plus.
