Marking an exploration in using Web technologies to enhance the browser, Mozilla Labs Thursday released Jetpack - an API using which developers can easily create Firefox add-ons - using technologies like HTML, CSS, and Javascript - without having to restart the browser.
Talking about the convenience for developers in creating add-ons, Mozilla said that it would take less than a dozen lines of code to write many functional Jetpack features.
The company, saying that Jetpack will ease the Website-building process, added in an official blog post: “Most importantly, from a user perspective, Jetpack will allow new features to be added to the browser without a restart or compatibility issues, resulting in little to no disruption to the online experience.”
Going by the opinion of the Jetpack development team-members - Aza Raskin, Atul Varma, and Nick Nguyen – the API will enhance the browser, and anyone who can build a Web site can contribute towards making the Web “a better place to work, communicate and play.”
However, since the Jetpack is a 0.1 release, the company is looking at feedback from developers, especially regarding the API design and possible bugs. Saying that the “unpolished, unfinished, and still highly prototyped” Jetpack lacks a fully-formed security model, Mozilla has urged the developers to exercise caution while using it!
