Obama calls India's Singh, congratulates him on new term

Washington  - US President Barack Obama Saturday called India's newly sworn-in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to congratulate him on being sworn in for his second term in office.

Obama also invited Singh to visit Washington, according to a statement released by the White House.

"The two leaders recalled their warm meeting in London on April 2 and discussed their mutual desire to strengthen US-India relations and work together to address common global challenges, such as the economic downturn, climate change, and counterterrorism," the White House press secretary said.

Obama also said the successful completion of the elections was the "largest democratic exercise that the world has ever seen" and a "testament to the strength of Indias democracy."

Singh was sworn in on Friday for a second consecutive five-year term.

Singh has drawn out a 100-day action plan for his new government and has emphasized that his focus will be on an economic revival and ensuring inclusive growth. (dpa)
