A 24-year-old Wheaton woman, Nunu Sung, who was charged on Friday with endangering the health or life of a newborn child and two counts of obstructing justice, will be appearing in the DuPage County Courthouse for a bond hearing on Monday. Presently, Sung is in custody on a $50,000 arrest warrant.
In a press release, Wheaton police Deputy Chief Thomas Meloni said that the obstructing justice charges against Sung result from purportedly abandoning her newborn son. The infant, with the umbilical cord still attached, was found lying naked under a tree on Friday on the 800 block of East Michigan Street; and was taken to Winfield's Central DuPage Hospital.
The infant was found by a woman, who heard her dog barking outside her house. The police was called, and the investigations undertaken by them revealed the identity of the mother, Sung.
As per the police reports, the infant, who was breathing when found abandoned, was "alive and doing well" at the hospital. Though initially, the infant was reported to be in a critical condition, his condition has been improving ever since.
In order to put the infant in protective custody, DuPage County prosecutors have initiated a civil neglect petition in juvenile court. After being discharged from hospital, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services will take him in foster care.
