With Apple already engaged in a battle of wits with the so-called 'jailbreakers,' the synchronization of the recently-released Palm Pre with Apple's iTunes has sprung up another scuffle of sorts!
In a rather aggressive tech note released Tuesday, Apple - though refraining from naming the Palm Pre - warned that that it does not support iTunes synchronization with "non-Apple digital media players." It further added that the future versions of iTunes will likely bring to an end the software's capability of synchronizing with third-party media devices.
Obviously, Apple would like to limit the iTunes capability for its own devices - particularly as the unique hardware-software integration has long been the chief selling feature for iPhone and iPod. However, breaking the iTunes' sync capability in future updates will not be easy for Apple, with Palm expected to retaliate.
In fact, the retribution from Palm is already underway! Catching Apple's subtle hint about Pre's 'iTunes synchronization,' Palm spokesman Lynn Fox hit back saying: "If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider."
