In an addition to its $11 million Series B funding round in May, the DNA-decoding startup 23andMe has now secured another $2.6 million from Google! With the recent contribution from Google, the company has raised $13.6 million, out of the total $24.26 million it intends raising in this round.
The recent funding by Google, for the Mountain View, California-based 23andMe, was disclosed in a regulatory filing. The genetics startup - that helps consumers in understanding and interpreting their genomes, and their risk of getting certain diseases - was co-founded by Anne Wojcicki, wife of Google's co-founder Sergey Brin.
The regulatory filing also revealed that 23andMe has received an additional $10 million loan from Brin, and the amount is being converted into Series B preferred shares. Back in 2007 too, Brin had extended a $2.6 million loan to the company, which was paid off from the proceeds of Google's subsequent $3.9 million stake in the company in May 2007. Both Brin and Wojcicki are also personal investors in the company.
About Google's recent investment in the startup, Google spokeswoman Jane Penner said: "We believed 23andMe's technology had promise the first time we invested, and we continue to believe that now. 23andMe helps people make sense of their genetic information, a mission we support and view as being consistent with Google's goal of organizing the world's information."
