According to an article in Times Online, the multi-billion game publishing bigwig Activision is reassessing its future support for Sony PlayStation 3. Most game developers opine that, given the competition in the game-console market, Sony should cut the $400 cost of PS3.
Saying that he is "concerned" about Sony's PS3, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick elaborated that the gaming console is losing impetus and is pricier to develop for, compared to developing games for other popular consoles. Kotick also said that the Wii and the Xbox 360 are doing better sales, and games for Xbox bring about better returns on invested money, vis-à-vis the PlayStation.
Referring to the widespread demand for a cut in the PS3 price, Kotick said: "They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates - the number of games each console owner buys - are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony." Kotick further said: "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console - and the PSP (portable) too."
Kotick said that in case Sony - which ranks third, behind Nintendo and Microsoft, in the so-called next-gen gaming console war - maintains its present $400 price point, its projected near-future sales might show signs of much more severe lag!
