Eastman Kodak Co. has informed that due to plunge in the sales of rich and vibrant film, Kodachrome, the company has decided to terminate the film.

Sales of Kodachrome film have plunged as photographers resorted to digital cameras and newer film.

The move came as Kodak tries to focus on its digital business.

It was in 1935 when Kodak introduced this color film and over the time it became the first commercially successful color film. But at present, it covers only a fraction of 1% of the company's still-picture film revenue.

The company obtains about 70% of revenue from digital sales.

Earlier in January, Kodak announced plans to trim down 3,500 to 4,500 jobs, as much as 18% of its work force, this year.

According to a Kodak spokesman, Kodachrome was created in the 1930s by musicians Leopold Godowsky Jr. and Leopold Maines. So Kodachrome is often referred to as being "made by God and Man."

Famous National Geographic photo of an Afghan girl with piercing green eyes was shot in 1985 by Photographer Steve McCurry who used the film Kodachrome film in his camera.

Kodak has plans to donate the rolls of the film to the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, New York, the company's hometown.

Kodak estimates that current supplies of the film will last until early this fall.

In recent trading, Kodak shares plunged 23 cents to $2.62; a year earlier the stock sold for $12.34.
