According to the statistics released by the New York-based mobile analytics and advertising company Medialets, on Wednesday the Palm App Catalog touched as many as one million downloads, ever since its recent release on June 6.
With the Palm Pre smartphone having reportedly sold 150,000 units post-release, the one million downloads figure implies a notable average of more than six applications per Pre, and nearly 33,000 downloads per app.
The recently-revealed numbers are strikingly impressive considering the fact that there are only about 30 applications - those too the 'free' ones - currently available through the Palm catalog.
In the opinion of mobile industry analyst Ken Dulaney, of the research firm Gartner, the limited Pre app options might become problematic for the Palm, as the users are obviously looking for more app content.
Apparently, Palm is aware of the problem and has already initiated the process of rectifying the severe lack of content. Last week, the company announced that it would be opening its software development kit (SDK) to developers who are interested in developing programs for the Pre.
Meanwhile, Medialets said that touching the one million app mark is no mean achievement by Palm. The blog said: "The Pre is an amazing device with lots of potential and we're looking forward to what a public SDK will offer both consumers and developers alike."
