With the reach of the Internet having extended to the geopolitical dominion, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has announced the appointment of a new President and CEO - the former director of US National Cybersecurity Center (NCSC), Rod Beckstrom.
ICANN - an international nonprofit corporation that, among other tasks, consigns and manages Internet domain names and IP addresses - announced Beckstrom's appointment at its annual meeting in Australia on Friday.
An MBA from Stanford University, Beckstrom, who has penned four books, has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. During his notable tenure as the director of NCSC, he administered an exceedingly distinct agency spread over civilian, military and intelligence communities.
Hailing Beckstrom's appointment as ICANN CEO, Vint Cert - regarded the "father" of the Internet - said that Beckstrom, who is widely experienced in industry and government matters, is fittingly equipped for his new global and "very challenging" job.
Meanwhile, commenting on the expanded realm of the Internet, whereby global events get reported on social networking sites in a jiffy, Beckstrom said: "The Internet has changed the way the world communicates and conducts commerce. And in no small way, this multi-stakeholder, bottom-up organization has been and will continue to be at the core of the Internet's ongoing evolution. Quite simply, the proof that ICANN works is that the Internet works!"
