According to The Wall Street Journal reports, in a one-of-its-kind letter to the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, leading tech business organizations of the world have asked for 'executive clemency' from China's Internet filtering program - the Green Dam-Youth Escort software.
The extraordinary letter comes in response to China's mandatory condition of distributing the aforementioned Internet filtering program with all new PCs for the Chinese market - an order that takes effect July 1!
IDG News Service, which has seen the June 26-dated extraordinary letter, signed by 22 organizations, said that the notable signatories include the US-based Information Technology Industry Council (ITI); the commerce chambers of the US; the European Union; and Japan.
While it is unprecedented for business organizations to write directly to a country's head, the move only proves that Green Dam mandate is an important issue. The signatories have expressed concern that the content filtering software condition may just be the beginning of a number of other problems!
The letter, requesting the Chinese Premier to drop the Green Dam software requirement, read in part: "Green Dam raises serious concerns for us and seems to run counter to China's important goal of becoming a vibrant and dynamic information-based society. … The Green Dam mandate raises significant questions of security, privacy, system reliability, the free flow of information and user choice."
