Close on the heels of the last week row over its ‘Hottest Girl’ application, Apple Thursday banned another ‘Hot or Not’ type of application called ‘BeautyMeter,’ due to its alleged pornographic content. The app was developed by German developer, Braun Software.
The contentious iPhone app was launched on January 17, and has been extensively exploited by users for the purpose of posting nude images, in spite of the fact that the program lacked a nudity admonition in its App Rating.
The app, which carried user-submitted images of women and men in different states of undress, enabled iPhone and iPod Touch owners to rate these pictures on the basis of the revealed body parts and the attire. Prior to the app’s pulling from the App Store, the ‘BeautyMeter’ featured a picture of an unclothed 15-year-old girl, which hints at child pornography.
Krapps, the Web site that first exposed the BeautyMeter picture, said that even with the recent removal of the app, “previous downloads are still fully functional - including access to the infamous 15-year-old nude image.”
The Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple has often been criticized by developers for its supposed unpredictability concerning pornography in the App Store – it has been pointed out that while a South Park app was rejected because of its ‘explicit’ language, apps like Hottest Girl and BeautyMeter were approved!
