Los Angeles  - Ford Mustang fans will soon be able to buy a limited edition of the US' first pony car in honour of the man who helped launch it to fame - former Ford and Chrysler executive Lee Iacocca.

Only 45 examples of the Iacocca Silver 45th Anniversary Edition Ford Mustang will be built, complete with exclusive Diamond Design interior trim, a signature dash plate and a slightly uprated Ford 4.6-litre V8 engine. Tuning company Metalcrafters in southern California is behind the special edition.

Starting on July 20, the cars will be sold exclusively through the Galpin dealership in Los Angeles, the world's biggest Ford dealer. Pricing has yet to be announced but industry insiders expect the Iacocca Mustang to retail for around 60,000 dollars.

"It's a trip down memory lane, a little bit of nostalgia," Iacocca told the USA Today newspaper. (dpa)
