Suicides and murders increase with recession

Recent economic recession has left no stone unturned to affect the society adversely.

Economic downturn brought in unemployment, which provides people with no food and a lot of time, which they utilize to think about anti-social acts like suicides and murders.

Effect of economic changes on mortality rates in 26 European countries from 1970 to 2007; have been analyzed by researchers at Oxford University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In the study it was found that the health impact of recession is worst where social spending is little.

The research shows that with a 3 percent increase in unemployment, suicide soared about 4 percent and murders increased 6 percent. Deaths from alcohol abuse increased 28 percent.

However, traffic fatalities plunged 4 percent.

Heart attack deaths in men aged 30 to 44 soared 0.86 percent for every 1 percent increase in unemployment.

In the UK, researchers estimated that current financial crisis would lead to 25 to 290 suicides per year.

Deaths from alcohol abuse increased 28 percent.

Rising suicide rates are suggestive of high levels of mental distress among unemployed and families.
