A team of British scientists has claimed to have created human sperm using embryonic stem cells, which according to them, will help in understanding fertility better.
During research, the stem cells were detached when the embryo was a few days old and were stored in liquid nitrogen.
They were encouraged to grow by bringing them to body temperature and putting them in a chemical mixture. Scientists used genetic marker to become enable to identify and distinguish "germline" stem cells.
Within six weeks the cells developed into sperms.
The UK researchers said the sperm were fully mature. They also produced a video to prove the research.
The study would throw light on questions like how toxins affect babies or why young boys with leukaemia can become infertile for life.
However, Professor Nayernia added that they had no goal of "producing human life in a dish".
On the other hand, some scientists are dubious about the fresh research.
