More than half the parents are complaining about the cost of "Back to school" expenditure incurred on PE kit and equipment, expenditure on new uniforms, according to a survey.

Households with incomes below £30,000 said they could not afford everything their child needed for the start of the new school year. Another survey including 1,063 parents, revealed that the schools have failed to act upon the warnings issued by the government to reduce the costs facing parents.

43 percent families were facing a problem buying school uniforms, 26 percent were not able to buy their children the full PE kit and 19% were struggling to pay for the books and equipment. "Families living in poverty often have just £20 to spend on food each week, so to find the money to cover all the back to school costs is impossible", said Colette Marshall, director of Save the Children UK.

Evaluating the education costs the government has suggested that the parents need to spend around £600 annually for their child's primary school education and £1,000 annually for secondary school.
