Keeping up their holiday spirit, movie crowds have ensured Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaugh's holiday comedy - 'Four Christmases', leads at the box office second weekend in a row, even as a handful of limited release Oscar hopefuls are spotlighted.
In a traditionally quiet weekend that follows U. S. Thanksgiving holiday, though 'Four Christmases' won a 'Bah, humbug!' response from critics, it still managed to rake in $18.2-million, taking distributor Warner Bros. Pictures two week haul to $70.8-million, and could end up with just over $100-million.
Action sequel 'Punisher: War Zone' at No. 8 ($4.0 million) and 'Cadillac Records' at No. 9 ($3.5 million) were the only two new films to make it to the Top Ten. A likely contender for a best-picture nomination at the Academy Awards, pedigreed release, 'Frost / Nixon', Universal Pictures' fact-based drama about a face-off between British TV interviewer David Frost and former President Richard Nixon running in a theatre each in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, earned a hefty $180,000.
Sean Penn's gay-hero saga 'Milk', in its second weekend only upped its intake by just 16%, despite almost tripling its theatre count to 99-venues, while 'Twilight' in its third weekend stood at No. 2 with $13.2-million, with Summit Entertainment's vampire romance earning $138.6 million to date, Walt Disney Co.'s 'Bolt' total tally standing at $79.3-million.
Big-budget epic 'Australia', 20th Century Fox's period romance, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman had a disappointing start, however, it managed to reverse rankings to stand at No. 4 with a total 12-day tally of $30.9 million. According to Chris Aronson, senior vice president of domestic distribution for the Australian film, positive word of mouth about the movie, has made people really keen to see it.
The James Bond thriller 'Quantum of Solace' continues to earn, though it has slipped one place to No. 5 earning $151.5 million after four weekends.
