Zenpep Approved for Pancreatic Disorder

Dutch drug maker, Eurand NV said that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Zenpep (pancrelipase) delayed-release capsules to treat a pancreatic disease preventing patients from digesting the food properly.

The exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is caused by a deficiency of digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas. These symptoms may also indicate conditions like cystic fibrosis and pancreatic cancer.

Jamie Wooldridge, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, said "The availability of clinical evidence in a pediatric population is particularly important for EPI patients with cystic fibrosis and their caregivers, as early improvements in body mass index significantly affect long-term survivability,"

This drug has been approved at various strengths for both adults and children including one year olds. It is expected to be available at the pharmacy stores later this year in the form of a delayed-release capsule.

Some of the side-effects reported during clinical testing include - gastrointestinal problems, abdominal pain, headache, cough and loss of weigh.
