Similar to the summer months, mosquitoes carrying potentially lethal diseases are found in states like Lakeville, Merrimac and New Bedford as reported by the state disease trackers.
Recently, bugs with West Nile virus have been discovered in Bourne, Quincy and Worcester. No human cases of either of these diseases have been reported so far this year in Massachusetts. Ten people have been diagnosed with West Nile in the state during the previous five years. There was also one case of eastern equine encephalitis last year and 13 people were diagnosed between 2004-2006 causing six deaths.
The authorities from the state Department of Public Health showed concern about the discovery of eastern equine in Merimac since it confirms the virus to be circulating in the northeastern reaches of the state.
Specialists have recommended taking preventive measures from mosquito bites. Some suggestions are staying indoors from dusk to dawn and wearing full sleeves, long pants and socks if it is necessary to go out. Other measures include the use of bug repellents like DEET, permethrin, picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Homeowners can take measures that reduce the breeding grounds of mosquitoes. This can be done by draining flower pots, wading pools and gutters.
