Snow Leopard apparently is another feather in the cap for Apple, in terms of 'energy-efficiency'! In addition to Apple's already good energy-saving credentials - prior to the recent launch of Snow Leopard - included 'Energy Star' ratings for all its computer models, the new OS not only speeds up the Macs but also is a notable 'environmental' candidate!
Those who have installed Snow Leopard are experiencing a definite decrease in 'battery drain' rates, thereby reflecting lesser power consumption - with their Macs giving additional minutes after they upgraded to the new OS.
Experts opine that the energy saving probably results from the Grand Central Dispatch's much more effective management, thereby economizing on CPU cycles.
Alongside the regular power-saving operations, the OS also boasts some other 'refinements', like - faster Time Machine Backups by up to 80 percent; Wake-on-LAN allowing Macs to 'sleep' in between file sharing sessions; better sharing options on Boot Camp; and less disk space requiring less back up.
CNET arrived at concrete results about Snow Leopard energy-efficiency by testing a 17-inch MacBook Pro alternatively with Leopard and Snow Leopard, and noted that the use of the new OS Snow Leopard would save 10 KWh of energy per year. Though that may not sound momentous at the first thought, it can imply substantial savings given the fact that Apple intends upgrading a number of Macs!
