On the lines of the "Cash for Clunkers" program for cars, the federal government is, this fall, planning a stimulus for the appliance industry, whereby, as per the Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, rebates will be given for the purchase of energy-efficient appliances.
The proposed "Cash for Clunkers Program for Appliances" is essentially aimed at providing a much-required stimulus to the pathetically rundown appliance industry, throughout the recession.
Though this is the first federal program of its kind, the US Department of Energy Web site has revealed that as many as 25 states have had such programs on the books for years. For the momentous endeavor, the federal government has given the states October 15 as the deadline for filing formal applications of participation.
Under the program, nearly $300 million dollars in rebate money would be in the balance; and unlike the "Cash for Clunkers" program, the appliances program would not necessitate the exchange of the old appliances for new ones. However, the program is applicable only to 'Energy Star' appliances; and individual rebates would vary from $50 to $200 dollars.
Expressing optimism about the program, David Sumpter, the owner of Sears Hometown Store in New Braunfels, said: "I think all the retailers are going to be involved. As long as we make sure customers fill out their rebates, it will work out!"
