The latest health insurance numbers released by the U.S. Census Bureau has released its latest numbers on health insurance coverage and some interesting but unpleasant information too.
The number of uninsured people living in the U.S. has increased by more than 600,000 from 45.7 million in 2007 to 46.3 million last year.
The number of people covered by through their jobs have gone down and the number of people covered by Medicaid, the government health program for the poor, have considerably gone up. This clearly indicates a downward slope in the number of taxpayer funded health programs.
Almost a third of the country is now covered by some government-sponsored program like Medicare, Medicaid or the children's health programs.
When the state of California was analyzed by UC Berkeley's Center for Labor Research and Education, it was found that California too follows a similar pattern. The rate of Californians covered by their jobs fell by one percent while those covered by government health programs rose by 18.3 percent.
There is one good news too in the otherwise disheartening information – the number of uninsured children is the lowest since 1987. This too can be attributed mostly to public programs which are now under a threat due to state budget cuts.
