Consumer prices increase on energy costs

Figures compiled by Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that consumer prices increased a little in August owing to a rise in gasoline prices, though prices of other consumer goods as well as services remain low.

Though gasoline prices in August increased as compared with July, yet they remained below against August 2008 prices.

Government’s Midwest CPI soared to 205.632 in August, representing an increase of 0.4 per cent from July. But that is still down by 1.8 per cent as compared with August 2008.

Apparel prices increase 2 per cent in August from July, while house prices dropped 1 per cent from August 2008.

Medical costs jumped by 0.3 per cent in August and depicted a rise of 3.3 per cent from a year earlier.

The national CPI in August was up 0.2 per cent from last month, though it plunged 1.5 per cent as compared with August 2008.

Although rate of unemployment is still soaring, representing a feeble economy, yet the Federal Reserve thinks that inflation will remain in control.
