Skype founders sue eBay for copyright infringement

Founders of Skype have filed a copyright suit against Skype’s parent company, eBay Inc.

Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis created Skype in 2002, allowing their users to make calls from their PCs to landlines, mobile phones and other PCs.

Joltid, another company owned by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis said eBay, which acquired Skype in 2005 for $206 billion but did not buy its core technology, had been altering the codes used in technology in breach of the licence.

The problem surfaced a group of investors including, Andreessen Horowitz, Silver Lake Partners and Index Ventures agreed to buy Skype in a deal worth $1.9 billion.

Now, apart from seeking an injunction to stop the alleged infringement, Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis are seeking billions of dollars in damages from eBay for continuing to use core technology without permission.

It may be noted here that earlier Joltid raised objection in Britain where the dispute is subject to court case in London in 2010.
