U.K. Internet Watchdog Lifts Wikipedia Ban

Brits can go back to accessing the Wikipedia web site, after the country's Internet watchdog has lifted its ban on users visiting a Wikipedia page that contains an image of a naked child.

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) taking exception to a page dedicated to a 1976 album by German heavy metal rock band The Scorpions, whose 'Virgin Killer' album cover carried the image of a prepubescent girl, deemed a 'potentially illegal indecent image' by the group, causing it to blacklist Wikipedia.

As a result, access to all pages of the online encyclopedia, were filtered by Internet service providers through the U. K. However, on Tuesday, Wikipedia Foundation, a non-profit organization that operates Wikipedia filed an appeal, leading IWF to announce the reversal of its earlier decision to blacklist.

Acknowledging preventing people from viewing an image, actually has the reverse effect, bringing attention to it, and in the light of uproar over its decision to block a Wikipedia page, the group has decided to lift its ban.

Delighted with IWF's lifting of the ban, General counsel of The Wikimedia Foundation - Mike Godwin stated, the incident underscored the need for a Internet watchdog.
