Two brands of spinach were recalled by a California distributor after salmonella was found during a routine test.
Salmonella is a microorganism which causes serious and fatal infections in children and elderly people. It also affects those who have a weakened immune system.
The symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Scarce cases of the bacterium entering the bloodstream and producing severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis, can also occur.
Ippilito International of Salinas is recalling 1,715 cartons of spinach harvested from Sept 1-3which were sold to retail, foodservice and wholesale buyers, said the California Department of Public Health.
The cartons were shipped to California under the label, “Queen Victoria”. Other states where these cartons were shipped include Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, and British Columbia, Ontario and Manitoba in Canada.
The second brand that will be affected by the recall is packed under the label, “Tubby”, which distributed the cartons in California and New York.
No cases of sickness have been reported so far.
