New Ideas on stimulus by energy executives

In the beginning of this month, clean energy companies nationwide were awarded a sum of over $500 million in stimulus funds; and yesterday, a meeting was held by the representatives from nine firms with Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner and Energy Secretary Steven Chu in Washington, D. C., with the aim of discussing as to how this sum is being spent.

In the meeting, executives from two local clean energy companies, who were the representatives from nine firms, expressed that with the aid of federal stimulus money, they will be able to produce nearly 2,000 jobs across the country, though only a few in Massachusetts.

First Wind, a wind energy developer based in Newton, and Ameresco, a Framingham company that oversees energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, were the two companies, whose executives forwarded their viewpoints during the meeting. They also suggested the federal officials some ways to improve the stimulus program for clean energy.

It should be noted that the money was divided by the treasury and energy departments jointly under a program that offers cash assistance to energy producers, instead of the more common tax credits.

Gaynor’s company got notable $115 million to develop wind farms in Cohocton, N. Y., and outside Danforth, Maine. The company shall produce sufficient electricity to power roughly 73,000 homes.

Furthermore, a new set of awards, about $550 million for 25 projects nationwide, were also unveiled yesterday by Chu and Geithner during yesterday’s roundtable. A sum of $11.7 million would soon be received by Ameresco, from that amount to finance three projects to convert landfill gas into usable energy. Two would be in California and one in Missouri.
