AT&T have finally brought the much-requested multimedia messaging service (MMS) to the smartphones in the US, thereby enabling countless iPhone users to send picture and video messages to other phones.
Ever since the launch of the iPhone in 2006, its users have been, time and again, bawling for MMS capability of the phone, more because the ability to send picture messages has been a feature of most of the other phones since 2003. Though Apple had announced that the iPhones will support MMS from June onwards, AT&T took several months to execute the decision.
The newly-delivered MMS capability can be downloaded by iPhone users by sending a "carrier settings update" via iTunes, using its "Check for Update" option. Once the update has been loaded, the users need to reboot their phone and get going with the MMS!
With the upgrade of iPhone's infrastructure to support MMS, AT&T - the exclusive carrier of Apple's iPhone - will have to now demonstrate its competence in handling the expected increase in network traffic, so as to sustain any long-term association with Apple.
Since the iPhone is a notable component in AT&T's earnings, a successful rollout of the MMS feature is more than expected from the telecom, if it desires to keep Apple form ditching its service in favor of rival Verizon Wireless once the exclusivity deal expires in 2010-end!
