Teen drivers at a higher risk of crashes

Parents of teenagers need to take preventive measures to reduce the number of accidents and car crashes while teenagers are driving as they are found to be the most dangerous drivers on roads.

Accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers but one simple rule can be very effective in reducing teen car crashes- don't give teenagers their own cars.

Incidents where teenagers were the main person driving the vehicle rather than sharing it with any other family member, the amount of risk involved for a car crash was twice as much.

According to data every fourth teenager who had sole access to a vehicle met with an accident in the past one year as compared to one in every ten, who had shared access.

This shows that 25 percent of teens driving their own car had at least one accident in the previous year. Data also shows 78 percent of car owner teen drivers indulging in using a cellphone while driving, and 70 percent over speeding.

These figures were taken from a survey conducted by researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia involving 2,167 teenagers. It was a survey done to analyze whether having primary access to a car increases the risk factor in teen drivers.

Sharing a family car improves the driving because it creates a sense of responsibility and any damage caused would affect the entire family.

Most of the parents are excited when their teenage children start driving; as a consequence of this parents tend to think that the child needs an independent car.

Researchers suggest that parents should consider delaying giving a car to the child at least till he has been driving for one year.
