Foot Pain Caused by Shoe Style

A new research has revealed that the kind of shoes one wore during younger ages could be the cause of foot pain.

Alyssa Dufour, of the Institute for Aging Research, Hebrew Senior Life in Boston, and colleagues did a study of foot pain and shoe style based involving a large population.

The findings, though, apply only to one kind of foot pain and only to women. It was found that women who wore good shoes were 67 percent at a lower risk of developing hindfoot pain or pain in the heel area of the foot.

Researchers roped in the participants in the long-running Framingham Study, both the original cohort and the cohort formed of offspring of original volunteers.

The expanded the group by adding study subjects from the same town in order to broaden the demographic make-up of the study group.

Data was examined based on 1,472 men and 1,900 women who had had complete foot examinations as part of the study. 56% of them were women on an average and they were 66 years old.

They were questioned about the kind of foot pain and then about the kind of shoes they have been wearing.

The shoes were then classified into various categories. It was found that most men wear good shoes and most women wear poor quality shoes.

The research discovered no association between foot pain in men and the shoes they wore, mostly because they do not normally wear high heels and spend less time in sandals, the researchers concluded.
