The $250-priced latest handheld game console, the Sony PSP Go, marks a transition from the established convention in terms of availability of gamed - will offer games only through download, as the system has practically no support for the physical media like discs or cartridges!
The catalog of the games downloadable from the PlayStation Store reveals that gamers can choose from over 100 titles, which fall in a broad price range, varying from between $5 and $39.99, including the much-hyped Gran Turismo PSP. For the first ten post-launch days, Sony will hand out one copy to every PSP Go buyer.
With regard to the attach rate - the number of games sold per console -, it will be easily tracked from the number of downloads in case of the PSP Go, vis-à-vis the other current generation of game consoles in which both physical media as well as downloads have to be kept track of.
However, since no other gaming system works only via the download route, the success of the PSP Go would have to be a 'wait and watch' situation - how well the download-only titles will sell for the new handheld cannot be estimated beforehand!
The closest comparison is iPhone/iPod Touch, which, as a casual and mobile gaming platform, sell thousands of downloaded titles - but in the range of 'free-to-99¢,' which is much lower than the price of PSP Go downloads.
