Usually older women complain more about lack of sound sleep as compared to men. The recent study revealed that women actually have better sleep and longer hours of sound sleep as compared to men. On the other hand men tend to over-estimate quality of their sleep.
Research team led by Dr. Henning Tiemeier of Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands analyzed data collected from 956 men and women 59 to 97 years old. 52.3 percent of the study subjects were women.
For six nights the study subjects were asked to wear actigraphs and keep a sleep dairy. Then the diary-reported and actigraphic total sleep time was compared. It was found that women sleep for 16 minutes more as compared to men moreover they had 1.2 percent higher sleep efficiency however men report better sleep.
Dr. Henning Tiemeier said: “The difference between subjective and objective sleep quality arise not because women are more likely to be complainers, but because men strongly overestimate their sleep duration.”
Researchers also claim that higher alcohol consumption was also a reason behind poor sleep quality in men. Research team also advised that to improve sleep quality the elders should sleep less in day and shouldn’t go to bed very early.
