Dell planning a US-specific Android-based smartphone for AT&T
Dell, AT&T

The well-known PC maker Dell Inc is set to venture into the fiercely competitive US cellphone market, largely dominated by Apple and Research in Motion. As per sources 'in the know,' Dell would launch a Google Android-based smartphone on the AT&T cellular network, as early as next year!

That Dell intends using the Google software for its smartphone - a US version of its August-unveiled, Android-based "oPhone" for China - is a notable win for Google, whose fledgling mobile platform competes with the more-established Apple and Microsoft platforms.

Google, which has been trying to expand the Android platform for nearly two years, has said that 32 carriers have announced nine Android devices in 26 countries during this week.

Meanwhile, according to unnamed sources aware of the proceedings at Dell, the US-specific smartphone will feature a touch screen and a camera. The device would depend on Android for behind-the-scenes technology for running its Web browser, music player and games.

Dell, which already has partnerships in place with cellular operators fro selling its netbooks, is reportedly also involved in talks with other US carriers, including T-Mobile, for offering the proposed device.

Going by a statement by Michael Tatelman, a Dell consumer division VP, Dell is "deeply engaged with our operator partners around the world" selling devices like mini-PCs, and intends to continue "to explore" other opportunities.
